Lortur

Lortur is a group of young filmmakers from Reykjavik , Iceland . In Icelandic Lortur means shit, or even a pile of shit. But an older meaning of the word is also food. More accurately; food that one must chew before swallowing. And if those two opposite meanings of the same word are given more speculation, then one could come to the result that food and shit is the same thing. The latter is just an alternation, even a metamorphose (in a poetic sense), of the other caused by the digestive track.

Therefore, the members of the group Lortur have kept in mind that film making is first and foremost group work where you can´t exclude anything. Not even human excretion. We pick up the ingredients, prepare them (and influence) according to our own taste and with our own ideas, and in the end we have a nutritious film. But it must be something that you can´t easily swallow. The viewer must put some effort in the consumption; chewing and then digesting. The intention is to make the films sit for a while in the digestive track of the mind - so they will not have the affects of a bliss that fades a way by the end of the screening.

This double meaning of the word lortur somehow crystallizes the group's ideology: Shit is just as important as food but only a few talk about it. And there are a lot of subjects and styles in art that only a few talk or think about because it is considered low culture or trash - ugly and tasteless. Next time you go to the bathroom think about the importance of taking a shit.
